Our Journey at Caravan Coffee Roasters
Ross Walker, Operations Director at Caravan Coffee Roasters
What do you do?
Caravan is a B Corp certified, independent speciality coffee roaster with a focus on 'well-travelled', meticulously sourced and roasted coffees. We have been rooted in inclusive hospitality and meaningful partnerships since we started roasting in the basement of our first restaurant back in 2010. We aim to bring the world to your table whilst celebrating the diversity that makes it vibrant.
Why is JEDI a focus for your organisation?
'All Welcome' and 'Caravan of Love' have been our values since the beginning in 2010. We still play The Housemartins song at every team party. We’re a team of curious, creative people with a passion for making and serving the highest quality food and coffee. No fuss. No ego. Just good people doing what they love, all day, every day.
With our Female Producer Programme, we aim to source 50% of our coffee from female-managed farms and donate 10p from every kilo of women’s coffee sold back to projects in those communities. Women carry out 80% of labour on coffee farms, but only ~20% of farms are currently female-led.
Why has your organisation chosen to become a JEDI MATTERS Collaborator?
We loved that there was a collective of SMEs from different categories coming together to champion JEDI and wanted to be part of it. We're a small roastery team and the shared learning with other like-minded businesses is invaluable.
What do you hope to achieve from JEDI MATTERS?
To be part of the campaigning movement the collective has started. It's great to see that this has already inspired sister collectives. Hopefully this leads to more and more businesses of all sizes prioritising inclusive and fair workplaces. We also hope the shared learning will help us improve the JEDI focus in our policy, training, culture and work environment.
